Unmuted

Updated: Mar 6

She made us rise as we were

told why the caged bird sings.

We saw Black women poets

honored by Presidents.

As we watched the esteemed

poet honor 2 presidents.

Clinton then Obama.

Reciting poetry at 2 presidential

inaugurations.

History in the making.

Teacher, mother, sister and friend.

Her wisdom speaking still.

She saw us, when no one else did.

She spoke our language and

validated us. Our muted

voices boomed with sound.

There wasn't a more phenomenal

voice for Black women.

The epitome of Black womanhood.

How many lessons we learned.

I stood tall as she said, I have my own

back.

Love is not binding it's freeing.

Maya Angelou freed Black women

giving us permission to love ourselves.

Believe what our eyes show us and

our hearts tell us the very first time.

Speak out loudly for yourselves.

The world can't hear a muted voice.

When they tell you, you can't.

Show them you will and can.

Even in fear, doubt, and in a

whisper find your voice within you.

Tell the world plainly I am

God’s child his power is with me.

Thank you for helping many

generations of women to find and

use our voice.
