The Broken Road of Sorrow: Stuart Dann

I saw the devil aside the road just before the sun did rise

Saw the fires of hell as his stare penetrated my eyes

I could see all his glee in his raw smile

I knew then he had been waiting there for me a while

I could feel all the fear that was deep in my soul

In his hand was a book with all the sins that I owe

This book of red and gold with my name lit up burning bright

I could see the cover smouldering where he held it so tight

I tried to turn my body but it would not move

My mind racing as my innocence I would have to prove

But the devil did not care he just stood and stared

Because he had everything written and had come prepared

I tried speaking but there was nothing that I spoke

He knew though what I was thinking, told me it was my faith I had broke

He tried to deceive told me the lord did not care

That he and the lord had played poker and he won my soul on a pair

He said when the game had taken place only my precious soul had been bet

There was one condition that the devil had to accept

It was that should he win he had to wait till I walked at this place

Then he told me he had cheated and he had slipped the ace

He said that the lord himself had cheated as with my soul he had slipped time

Though at the game he was mad but the lords move was sublime

But now the contract is up and there is no more time I can borrow

That he had been waiting many years until I walked upon the broken road of sorrow
